In a major boost to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s drive for Universal Health Coverage, the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC), in partnership with the Rabiu Olowo Foundation, has enrolled 200 Sickle Cell Warriors into the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme.
The beneficiaries - 100 from Edo South, 50 from Edo Central and 50 from Edo North- will now enjoy access to affordable, quality healthcare without financial hardship.
The flag-off was held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Edo State Sickle Cell Centre, Central Hospital, Benin City, with children living with sickle cell disease, their parents and key health stakeholders in attendance.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of EDOHIC, Dr. Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, lauded the Rabiu Olowo Foundation for its humanitarian gesture and for keying into the Commission’s vision of ensuring that no vulnerable Edo resident is left behind.
She said the initiative demonstrates EDOHIC’s commitment to financial protection for the vulnerable and its mandate to deepen health insurance coverage across the State.
"This intervention aligns with our commitment to Universal Health Coverage. EDOHIC will continue to explore strategic partnerships that remove financial barriers to healthcare, especially for vulnerable groups like our Sickle Cell Warriors. There will be more interventions like this across the State,” Dr. Ikpea-Enaholo assured.
She urged beneficiaries to take full advantage of the scheme by regularly accessing care at their assigned health facilities.
On his part, the General Manager of the Rabiu Olowo Foundation said the Foundation was moved by the emotional and financial burden families face in managing sickle cell disease, hence the partnership to cushion that burden and promote wellbeing.
A parent who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries described the enrolment as a lifeline, thanked EDOHIC and the Foundation, and called on other well-meaning organizations to emulate the gesture.
The partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between government and philanthropic organizations in expanding health coverage and reducing out-of-pocket health expenditure for vulnerable populations.
With this intervention, EDOHIC reaffirms its position as the gateway to affordable and quality healthcare for all Edo residents.
